Walid Mahmud

I build software that stays out of its own way — clean interfaces, careful logic, and the smallest amount of code that does the job well.

About

A sophomore studying Computer Science at St. John's, learning the craft from the fundamentals up.

Most of what I enjoy about this field sits in the gap between an idea and something you can actually click. I like the part where a rough sketch turns into working structure — data models that make sense, interfaces that feel obvious, and code that a future reader can follow without a map.

Right now I'm deep in coursework and personal projects: algorithms and data structures, systems-level work in C++, and web development on the side because it's the fastest way to put something real in front of people.

Outside of assignments, I'm usually rebuilding something I've already built, just smaller and cleaner than the last attempt — or automating something I'd rather not do by hand, like digging through internship postings.

Resume

The one-page version.

Education, projects, experience — the same story as above, condensed to a sheet. It opens right here on the page.

Focus

What I'm building with.

Languages

C++, Python, Java, JavaScript. Comfortable close to the metal and comfortable in the browser.

Fundamentals

Data structures, algorithms, complexity, memory. The parts that stay true no matter the framework.

Web

Semantic HTML, modern CSS, vanilla JavaScript. Interfaces that load fast and behave predictably.

Tooling

Git and GitHub, the command line, VS Code. Version everything, automate the boring parts.

AI automation

I put Claude to work on the internship search: it reads my resume, finds openings that genuinely line up with what I know, and comes back with a short list and the reason each one fits. What used to be an evening of open tabs is now a prompt — so the time goes into the applications instead of the hunting.

Contact

Let's build something.

The fastest way to reach me is email. I read everything.

Projects

PC Widgets — Desktop Widget App for Windows Python, PySide6

2026

github.com/walidm232007-prog/PC-Widgets

  • Built an Apple-style widget layer for the Windows desktop in Python and PySide6 — clock, weather, stocks, system, storage, calendar, notes, and now-playing cards, with every icon and chart drawn at runtime in QPainter.
  • Engineered the desktop integration: a global hotkey that raises and lowers the board, a tray menu for themes and layering, a single-instance guard, launch at startup, and layout persistence that keeps every card on a reachable monitor.
  • Designed a Workspace widget that shows live AI coding-agent activity through a file-based signal contract, one state file per agent so agents never race each other.

KGB — Artist Site for NYC Music Collective JavaScript, Firebase, HTML/CSS

2026

keepgettingbigger.com

  • Built a full artist platform covering releases, merchandise, and media, gathering requirements directly from the group.
  • Engineered a database-backed account system handling user registration, login, and stored user content.

Saiba's Kitchen — 2D Platformer Game Java

2025

github.com/walidm232007-prog/Saibas-Kitchen

  • Programmed a side-scrolling platformer with sprite animation, collision detection, player physics, and level progression.
  • Architected the codebase around object-oriented class hierarchies separating entities, input handling, and rendering.

Experience

Babel Audio — AI Trainer Remote

Feb 2026 – Jul 2026
  • Collected and validated voice datasets used to train conversational AI systems.
  • Led recorded sessions with contributors across multiple regions, enforcing accuracy and consistency against strict quality-assurance guidelines.
  • Reviewed submissions against quality standards and corrected inconsistencies before delivery.

Leadership & Volunteer Experience

South Asian Student Association, St. John's University — Freshman Representative

Oct 2025 – Present
  • Created and managed social media content promoting club events.
  • Initiated outreach to other student organizations to launch joint events, expanding club visibility across campus.
  • Coordinated event planning and execution with team members from setup through post-event follow-up.

India Homes Senior Center — Volunteer Jamaica, NY

Jun 2024 – Sep 2024
  • Provided hands-on technical support to seniors, improving digital literacy across mobile and desktop platforms.
  • Organized membership and subscription records using spreadsheet tools to maintain accurate data.

Certifications

Information Technology Specialist — Network Security, issued by Certiport
